1. About
You play as a character called The knight, after waking up you find yourself in a weird place called Hallownest with an infection spreading and infecting all of its residents. You are tasked with killing the three dreamers, to go into the black egg and kill the Hollow knight and take his place as a vessel for the infection, on the way you meet friends, enemies, secrets and monsters. The knight is a short creature with black skin and a mask with horns on it and a needle as a weapon, but the more you travel, the more items you'll get to aid you on your journey like:
- You get the dream nail to enter another realm.
- You gain the ability to climb walls.
- You gain the ability to dash.
There is alot more abilities and more about the story of Hallownest to discover but this is the basics.
2. The World Of Hallownest
The world of Hallownest is a big underground kingdom where the story of Hollow Knight takes place. The many areas of Hallownest include:
- The Forgotten Crossroads: The starting area where you are taught the basics.
- Dirtmouth: A small town you discover on your travels.
- The City of Tears : A city that used to be filled with joy now empty with the infection.
- Deepnest : An area filled with darkness and spiders waiting to kill.
There is so much to explore in the world of Hallownest, but the rest is for you to find and discover.
3. The Enemies
In Hallownest there are three different types of enemies The knight faces:
- Normal enemies: They commonly have one or more attacks and go down quite quickly and spawn more than once unlike bosses. Normal enemies include Crawlid, Heavy sentry, Primal aspid and more are a great example on normal enemies
- Bosses: They commonly are often more challenging than normal enemies having more than one attack. Bosses like The False Knight, The Hollow knight, Hornet the protector and more are a good example.
- Dream bosses: Using the dream nail on either a warrior grave or one of the previous bosses can result in a much harder boss. Great examples are The Radiance (The Hollow knight while restrained), Markoth (Warrior grave), Failed Champion (False Knight hidden body) and many more
Remember: not all Normal enemies are easy, and not all bosses are hard.
4. NPC's (Non Playable Characters)
There are many NPCs in Hallownest and all of them fall into one or more categories:
- Quest NPCs: These NPCs give you a quest and most often there is an amazing reward after you complete it. Good examples are the Grubfather and the Grey Mourner.
- Merchant NPCs: These NPCs often sell something or do something, for a price. Good examples are Cornifer and Leg Eater.
- Traveler NPCs: Traveler NPCs are those who are found in different places like Zote the Mighty and Mister Mushroom.
- Others: These NPCs didn't fit into any of the other groups. Good examples are Elderbug and Mask Maker and many more.
Remember: Altough Hornet is an enemy, she is also an NPC and you can talk to her in the Black egg.
5. The Endings
There are many endings within the world of Hallownest, few good, many bad and two secret endings. We will be talking about what happens in the endings and how to get them:
The Hollow Knight Ending:
After you kill the Hollow knight in the black egg he kneels in pain as you absorb all of the radiances infection, shortly after you are seen standing in the center of the black egg as chains form around you, forever trapped in the black egg.
Sealed Siblings Ending:
After you get the Void heart charm and defeat the Hollow knight, Hornet appears and restrains him. If you attack him or spend enough time doing nothing he breaks free and knocks Hornet unconscious, if you defeat him now you absorb the radiances infection, and now both you and Hornet are forever trapped in the black egg.
Dream No More Ending:
After you get the Void heart and Hornet restrains the Hollow knight. If you use your dream nail on him instead of continuing the fight with the Hollow knight, you instead fight the Radiance (The one who started the infection). After beating the radiance, you tear them apart and drag them into the void and the black egg collapses, as the infection disappears Hornet finds your mask split in two, as all your siblings can finally rest in peace.
Embrace The Void Ending:
If you go to Godhome and beat Pantheon 5 and the absolute radiance, a giant monster is seen ripping the absolute radiance apart, then Godseeker is seen looking up as it rains void and the giant monster passes by, grabbing Godseeker with its void tendrils, meanwhile in the real world Godseeker is seen crying black ooze as void tendrils come out of them. Later Hornet is seen in the black egg being approached by a mysterious figure (probably the Hollow knight).
Extra:
- Delicate Flower Ending: There is also another ending where if the player gives the Godseeker the delicate flower, instead of sprouting void tendrils they instead disappear leaving the delicate flower behind.
- If you find and talk to Mister Mushroom in a certain order and beat the game in any way you will get a secret cutscene. It shows the Mister Mushroom flying into the sky, then the screen goes black and the words to be continued appear on screen.
